Belgrade is the capital of Serbia's southeast European republic. The fort testifies to the strategic importance of the city to the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires and is now home to numerous museums and Kalemegdan, a large park.
Nice coffee houses and smoky pepper dives Knez Mihailova, a vibrant pedestrian boulevard flanking the ancient Belgrade Fortress with historic buildings. The quarter on the river Savamala has gone from ruin to regeneration and is the (for now) artistic headquarters of the city. Deeper in the bowels of Belgrade are museums that watch over the country's political, religious and military heritage.
Belgrade is a two-half city: the old and the new. During the socialist era New Belgrade was created, and the block grid retains its Soviet feel. Exploring the area is worthwhile to get a taste for this significant part of the history of the city but much of the action is limited to the ' old ' side. In the same side of the Sava as New Belgrade, Zemun is new again
Cafés and bars are sparkling day and night, and the terraces that crowd the pavements remind you that the distance and culture of Italy and Greece are not that far away. Without the coastline, Belgrade has a Mediterranean lifestyle. Coffee is taken here very seriously but when the sun goes down, beers or spritzes replace the espresso cups.
Both Belgrade markets have a flea market and a segment on fresh produce. Locals are hustling their homemade specialties in the latter: Balkan cuisine is definitely no heaven for vegetarians unless you're able to live entirely on the job. Food of Belgrade is an edible tour of the history of the city.
One of Belgrade's best aspects of clubbing is that you can (normally) book a table without being roped into spending hundreds of dollars on bottle service. Typically, there is no fixed dance floor; partygoers prefer to dance at tables, or wherever they stand.
The best way to tour Serbia is by using car hire services as it will ensure easy mobility and authentic experience of the area. Car rental options are numerous and easy to find through online directories. It is also possible to find cheap car hire services ideal for individual or even group tours and still have great fun.
When you rent a car, you are free to drive anywhere you want, if you abide by the laws of local traffic which might be different from what you are used to. Always be a responsible driver and stick to the legal speed limit.
If you want to cross the border into another country, restrictions and/or additional fees can apply. If you want to take the car on a ferry, please always check with the local car rental company if this is permissible as it is not approved by all car rental companies or additional fees may apply.
